So they can make the mid-engine Prius GT300-R the world deserves.
Like this but with less wang, less cylinders, more electric power, more lighter, and more exhaust-blown diffusers.
Just use a turbo Camry V6 (350hp) in place of the V8 and bump up the electric system so it makes 150 hp and 200 lb-ft, and do fuck-all to make it weigh 2,000 lbs, including a full carbon monocoque, reducing most electronic nannies (just ABS, TC, Launch) and less wang (the goal is a 203 mph car), but make use of exhaust-blown diffusers and the stickiest, toughest road-going Advan Yokohama makes (actually make it so there are two optional tire packages: specially-developed versions of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).
Oh, and before I forget, optional manual transmission and tower-shifted sequential.

IIRC, the GT300 Prius uses an early iteration of the carbon mother chassis concept, but I could be mistaking it for that CRZ that is equally bonkers.

OK, one the other hand, we can’t call that mid-engine hybrid supercar a Prius.

I think it’s harder to sell this as a Prius because it runs counter to the non-enthusiasts’ perception of the Prius. A new name, on the other hand, has a perception of 0. By coming up with a new name, Toyota’s marketing department can get it at any angle, and can aim the car to a higher tier, unhampered by the name Prius.
Or... we keep the Prius name, but aggressively promote the car’s origins as a race car first, then come up with commercials and unedited, uncut YT clips of time trial runs and duels with selected supercars. You prove to people, to customers, that the Prius has manned up and can pick fights it can win.
Still, I think a new name can do better wonders for selling the car.

idk, I feel like keeping the name will like you said, throw everyone off at first as a joke. BUUUUUT......I feel the 1,000 hp (ok, maybe 900+ in street car form) will speak for itself and make it legend. Even if a fellow elite human will knock on you for driving a Prius, you can confidently just shrug them off because you know you have the faster car. Class > douchey badge elitists. Also, regular Prius owner (who are not more or less evil as ANY other type of car owner honestly) can have a little more pride that their car is related to an absolute beast

Deal. We call the car the Toyota Prius GT300-R, a 2,000-lb mid-engine automobile with a combined 500hp and 500lb-ft power and torque from a turbocharged Camry V6 and supercapacitor system, which shall get the car off the line and into 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, and will have a top speed of 204 mph. Base price is at $50,000. Options can be had either a la carte (like Porsche) and/or as a package (like others).

And don’t use a Prius. Why would you use a Prius?
